The Discovered Attack: Chess’s Most Powerful Tactic

A discovered attack happens when you move one piece out of the way to unleash an attack from a piece behind it. Because two things happen at once — the moving piece can make its own threat while the hidden piece attacks — it is one of the most powerful tactics in chess.

Here is how it works and how to find it.

The Discovered Attack: Chess's Most Powerful Tactic

How a discovered attack works

Line up your own pieces so that one blocks the other’s line of fire. When you move the front piece, the back piece suddenly attacks along the newly opened line. The opponent now faces two threats and can usually only answer one.

  • The moving piece can capture or make a threat of its own.
  • The hidden piece (rook, bishop, or queen) attacks along the opened line.

Two threats in one move is why the discovered attack wins so much material.

The deadly discovered check

The deadly discovered check

The strongest version is the discovered check: the hidden piece gives check when the front piece moves away. Because the opponent must respond to the check, your moving piece can grab a queen or rook completely for free.

Tip: whenever your king and an enemy piece are lined up with one of your pieces in between, look for a discovered check. Even a modest move can win big material because the check must be answered first.

Double check

An even rarer, deadlier form is the double check, where both the moving piece and the revealed piece give check at once. The only legal reply is to move the king — blocking or capturing cannot stop two checkers — which often leads straight to mate.

How to spot them

  1. Look for your own pieces lined up behind a piece that can move.
  2. Check whether the front piece has a strong move (a capture or a threat).
  3. See whether the revealed attack hits the king or a big piece.

Train your eye

Discovered attacks are easy to miss because the winning move can look quiet — you are moving one piece while another does the damage. Solve puzzles featuring them until the pattern jumps out at you.

Once you learn to see lined-up pieces as loaded weapons, you will start winning material out of nowhere. The discovered attack, and especially the discovered check, is a tactic every improving player must master.
